Chief Executive John Lee chaired on two consecutive days the first meetings of the Steering Group on Integration into National Development and the Steering Committee on the Northern Metropolis.

At the Steering Committee on the Northern Metropolis’ first meeting held today, Mr Lee said the Northern Metropolis is strategically important to Hong Kong’s future as it could bring about quality living, economic vitality and better integration with Shenzhen and other cities in the Greater Bay Area. As such, the steering committee would strengthen the governance system for the development of the Northern Metropolis by providing high-level policy steer.

Steering committee members must press ahead with the initiatives to expedite the Northern Metropolis’ development on all fronts, while various departments must strengthen co-ordination to further enhance development speed, efficiency and quantity, he added.

The committee members also discussed and agreed on the actions required for formulating the action agenda and implementation plan for next year.

They include devising industry policies and associated land disposal methods, coming up with proposals for landmark developments covering key public facilities, and setting out land requirements for industries and landmark developments at the earliest opportunity.

It was also noted that the Deputy Financial Secretary will lead the Hong Kong side in a joint task force with relevant Mainland authorities for regular communication on matters relating to the Northern Metropolis.

As for the Steering Group on Integration into National Development, the Chief Executive hosted its first meeting yesterday. The meeting focused on the discussion about the key and priority policies and initiatives for Hong Kong to dovetail with the national strategies.

Mr Lee said the steering group and its subgroups will formulate and implement initiatives proactively and pragmatically, while adhering to the principle of achieving mutual benefits with the Mainland.

This would help Hong Kong enhance its active integration into the national development, grasp the opportunities brought about by such development, and create strong impetus for the city’s own growth, he noted.
