Financial Secretary Paul Chan today had a breakfast meeting with World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, where he introduced Hong Kong's latest economic and trade developments.

Noting that Hong Kong is stepping towards normalcy, Mr Chan said the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government will further deepen the city's role as an international financial centre, trading centre, aviation hub and shipping centre, thereby making more and greater contributions to forging a better connection between the country and the world as well as promoting common and inclusive development.

During the meeting, the Financial Secretary expressed his warmest congratulations to the successful conclusion of the seventh "1+6" Roundtable in the Mainland, saying that the event had made valuable contributions to building an open world economy and boosting global economic recovery and growth.

He also congratulated Ms Okonjo-Iweala on securing multilaterally negotiated outcomes at the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference in June.

Mr Chan noted that while the global economy is weathering various challenges, Hong Kong, China, as a WTO founding member, has for years been a firm supporter of a rules-based multilateral trading system with the WTO at the core and has been actively promoting and forging free trade.

He pointed out that Hong Kong supports the reform of the WTO in the right direction, including the restoration of a fully and well-functioning dispute settlement system as soon as possible.
