Chief Executive John Lee today said the Dongguan Hong Kong International Airport Logistics Park will be able to cut cargo handling costs by 50% and the handling time by one-third upon completion.
Following a day’s tour of Dongguan and Foshan, Mr Lee outlined to reporters the benefits of the project being jointly undertaken by the Hong Kong Airport Authority and the Dongguan Municipal People’s Government.
“It will be reducing a lot of costs and a lot of time because the procedure of customs clearance will be carried out once and for all, instead of doing two cargo customs clearance procedures in Dongguan and also in Hong Kong.
“We do the customs clearance procedure in Dongguan and then once it is onboard the vessel, then it will be directly transported to the aircraft for the air cargo to be delivered to its destination.”
Hong Kong International Airport’s cargo handling capacity can be further raised when the logistics park is fully developed, he added.
