The 18th Asian Financial Forum (AFF) continued today at the Convention & Exhibition Centre with a keynote luncheon on the development, application and governance of artificial intelligence (AI).

Prof Stuart Russell, Co-chair of the World Economic Forum’s Council on AI, delivered a keynote speech, sharing his insights on how AI could become a new engine for global economic growth.

He also shared his thoughts with reporters on the development of AI in Hong Kong, highlighting that the city has a strong advantage in terms of talent.

“I do know some people in the Hong Kong universities and you have some excellent scientists here, some very good research centres. So that is very positive, and we should try to make sure that it is built on that there is good co-operation between the universities and companies in the sector.

“I think in the Hong Kong economy there is a lot of trading, financial services, and so on. And these are areas that are quite specialised. And I think we can look to develop targeted AI systems for those particular problems.”

There have also been predictions that artificial general intelligence or AGI could emerge by 2026, potentially reaching or even surpassing human intelligence. However, Prof Russell believes this scenario is unlikely. He further stressed the importance of addressing risks, such as cybercrime, while continuing to advance the development of AI.
